Dogs that were forced to leave their homes due to the wildfires in Los Angeles are getting a second chance at a new life in Massachusetts. Nine dogs are being brought in from the Pasadena Humane Society, and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) is ready to give them a loving home.
These dogs, ranging from one to ten years old, are mixes of different breeds like hounds, German Shepherds, pit bulls, and cattle dogs. They had been living in animal shelters before the fires and were forced to flee because of the dangerous flames. After traveling to Massachusetts, these dogs will be available for adoption at the Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) in Salem.
The process of bringing these dogs to Massachusetts took several weeks of planning and hard work. But for Josie Waldron, MSPCA-Angell’s relocation manager, the effort was well worth it. She said, “It took weeks for this plan to come together, but dealing with the logistical challenges is well worth it to bring these dogs—who were living in shelters prior to the fires—to Massachusetts, where we’re confident they’ll find the loving homes they deserve.”
These dogs are currently in quarantine, as required by law, for 48 hours. During this time, they will also receive any medical treatment they need. Once they’ve completed this period, they will be ready for adoption.
Waldron added, “We would love for people to come out and adopt these dogs, but we also have many other amazing dogs already in our care looking for homes.” She encourages anyone who isn’t ready to adopt yet to consider fostering a dog. Fostering will help these dogs relax in a home environment and will also create space in the shelter for more animals in need.
The MSPCA is hoping that these dogs will find their forever homes soon, and that people will support the shelter’s efforts by adopting or fostering a pet.
