When Cavanaugh’s neighbor was taken into custody, his family found out that the suspect had previously served a total of twenty years in prison for a serious offense and ten years for a second, less serious offense. It is their opinion that his history of violent behavior was widely known, and that he should have never been allowed to go free.

Cavanaugh’s family is now responsible for dealing with the costs associated with the funeral, while the suspect is still being held in custody pending charges.
