Freezing Cold Grips NYC, First Code Blue of Winter Provides Shelter for Homeless

Emergency alert activated in NYC as frigid temperatures set in.

As temperatures plummet overnight into Monday, dipping below freezing, the Department of Homeless Services has declared the first Code Blue Weather Emergency of the season.

A Code Blue alert will remain active until 8 a.m. on Monday. Forecasters predict temperatures will soar to 29 degrees. Although the metropolitan area isn’t expecting any snow, there may be some flurries in the northern and western regions because of the lake effect.

City-wide access to shelters and drop-in centers will be provided for individuals experiencing homelessness and those in need of refuge. Everyone will have access to shelter during a Code Blue.

Outreach teams will be sent by the NYCDHS to provide support to those experiencing homelessness. If you come across someone experiencing homelessness in the cold, please reach out to 311, and an outreach team will be dispatched to assist them.
