Up to 2 Feet of Snow This Weekend

A major snowstorm is heading toward northern Utah this Friday night, with the mountains expected to get as much as 2 feet of snow. This will likely cause difficult and dangerous travel conditions over the weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings for an atmospheric river event, which will bring heavy snow to the Wasatch Mountains north of I-80 and the Bear River Range. This storm will be strongest on Saturday and Sunday, with mountains at higher elevations—above 7,000 feet—seeing anywhere from 12 to 24 inches of snow. People in lower areas may first experience rain, but snow could start falling by Saturday night.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is cautioning drivers that mountain roads, especially highways like I-80, US-89, and other high-elevation routes, may become dangerous. Reduced visibility and icy roads could create major hazards. Travelers are advised to be prepared for chain restrictions and be aware of changing weather. It’s also a good idea to pack a winter survival kit and check road conditions before heading out.

In Salt Lake City, temperatures will be milder, reaching highs of around 48°F on Saturday and 52°F on Sunday. Rain is expected in the valley, with occasional snow showers possible at night. Wind gusts could also make driving in canyon areas harder.

This storm will continue into early next week, with more snow likely in the mountains and unstable weather affecting northern Utah. As the storm moves, snow amounts may increase, and travel disruptions could last longer than expected.

It’s important for residents and travelers to stay updated with weather forecasts. If possible, avoid non-essential travel in the mountains and be prepared for winter driving conditions throughout the weekend.
