Norovirus Cases Surge in Minnesota Health Officials Issue Warning Amid Holiday Gatherings

Minneapolis, MN – Health authorities in Minnesota are alerting the public about a surge in cases of a highly infectious disease: norovirus.

The Minnesota Department of Health has confirmed 40 instances of norovirus, commonly referred to as the stomach flu. That figure is almost double the typical count for December.

As holiday celebrations commence, the likelihood of transmitting the virus increases significantly.

Symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps are associated with norovirus infection. Health officials recommend washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before eating or preparing food and after using the restroom to minimize the risk of infection.

If you’ve experienced any of these symptoms in the past three days, it may be wise to reconsider hosting this year and steer clear of any food preparation.

Ultimately, bleach can be quite beneficial. It is essential to thoroughly disinfect surfaces following any occurrences of vomiting or diarrhea.

“It’s sort of common-sense guidelines that we’ve given for all viruses apply this year as well. Keep yourself healthy by washing your hands, avoid contact if you can with others who are sick or limit that,” said Dr. Susannah Hills, assistant professor at Columbia University Medical Center.

“If you’re sick yourself, then just be aware of protecting those around you. And also be particularly cautious if you’re at risk, if you have immunodeficiency, if you’re at risk for being particularly susceptible if you do get sick,” she added.

Fortunately, symptoms of norovirus usually clear up in just one to two days, leaving no lasting impact. If you happen to fall ill, make sure to keep your hydration levels up.

If your symptoms persist beyond that point, reach out to your health care provider.
