New Jersey residents were bracing themselves for a wintry mix of snow and icy conditions on the eve of the winter solstice. The slippery roads, coupled with increased traffic as people were heading into the Christmas holiday, made it difficult for many drivers across the state.
Slippery Roads and Traffic Slowdowns
Drivers had to contend with icy patches, making roadways treacherous. Many of them had to slow down so as to ensure safety. This wintry weather combined with holiday travel meant more than usual traffic.
News 12 spoke to some drivers who shared their experiences and urged others to drive much more cautiously.
“It’s bad—cars are slipping,” said one driver, frustrated by the conditions.
Another driver added, “I drive a Honda, and any time I drive in the snow, it can barely turn.”
Some vehicles fared better than others. However, the weather simply made driving difficult for most.
A Call for Caution
Sean Sasso, a driver who was traveling from Atlantic City to his home in Westchester, New York, said his journey heading north on Friday wasn’t too bad. However, he emphasized the importance of patience and caution on the roads.
“If drivers are willing to take it a little slower than usual and be a little patient, I think everyone should get home OK,” Sasso said.
Many of the drivers echoed this sentiment, urging others to slow down and stay alert to prevent accidents.
Preparing for More Holiday Travel
With Christmas just days away, traffic is expected to increase as more people hit the roads for last-minute shopping and holiday visits. The combination of busy highways and unpredictable weather could make driving even more challenging in the coming days.
Officials are suggesting to the motorists to consult weather forecasts before venturing out and plan for extra traveling time. In addition, a traveler should make sure to ensure that the vehicle used for traveling is prepared to withstand winter conditions, well-maintained tires, and maintain an emergency kit in their vehicle.
Road Safety
To stay safe in winter conditions, one should slow down, keep additional distance between cars, and refrain from braking hard or sharp turns.
For those with a feeling of uncertainty towards driving on snowy or icy roadways, other means of transport or postponing travel might be best.
A Community Reminder
The icy weather on Friday was a warning to New Jersey residents as the winter season sets in.
Some drivers felt that the roads were not bad, while others found it challenging when snow and ice mixed on the roads.
Practicing patience and caution will help them ensure that everyone reaches the destination safely. With more holiday traffic expected, staying alert and prepared is essential for a smooth journey.
