Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition Slims Down by Removing S Pen Support

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition Slims Down by Removing S Pen Support

Samsung has previously had to decide whether to add stylus support or make foldables slimmer. This is due to the fact that S Pen-compatible phones need a digitizer, which thickens the entire display assembly. But according to a story from The Elec, the company is trying to create a display technology that can register S Pen input without the need for a digitizer.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition, which was just announced by the firm, had a smaller form factor among other features. When folded, the Special Edition, which was only available in Korea, measured 10.6 mm, and the standard Galaxy Z Fold 6 measured 12.1 mm. According to Elec, Samsung was able to reduce the overall thickness by 0.6mm by removing the display digitizer, which was responsible for 0.3mm.

However, there was a glaring trade-off because the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition did not support the S Pen.

Samsung is also testing the use of glass back plates, often known as “internal hinges,” in folding phones. The Elec claims that this is a first for Samsung, which currently uses titanium, carbon fiber reinforced plastic, steel, and stainless steel in all of its foldable products. Samsung considers glass as an alternative because of its lighter weight and cheaper price. Furthermore, the action might be a part of Samsung’s attempt to reduce the quantity of materials that must be imported from China.

Although it looks like none of these developments will be available for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, they could be important as Samsung attempts to compete in the competitive foldable market.
