Theresa: New EP by The Front Bottoms

The Front Bottoms is a band whose music spans genres such as Alternative Rock, Indie Rock, Folk Punk, and also Emo. They have a total of eight albums, Theresa being the newest EP that was released Sept. 2, 2022. The band started off in New Jersey at Woodcliff Lake. They were founded by Brian Sella, the main singer, and Mat Uychich, who plays the drums, in 2006. The new EP includes five songs called, “More than it Hurts you,” “The Bongo Song,” “Hello World,” “The Supply of Power,” and “The winds.”
This EP continues the “Grandma EP Series,” which started in honor of the drummer, Mat Uychich’s grandma who passed away in 2014. This series starts with the Rose EP. Four years later, in 2018, they released the Ann EP in honor of Brian Sella’s grandmother. Theresa is the third part of this series, and it does not disappoint. The opening track to Theresa, “More Than it Hurts You” is a fun pop-sounding song that pulls you into the rest of the EP. The overall EP is reminiscent of their older music, most notably “In Sickness and Flames.”
Conversely, the five songs on Theresa are a confident step into a maturity that the band always had. A kind of sad, but goofy lack of poetic rhyme that is still endearing despite the stubborn honesty. Of course, 2018’s Ann and 2014’s Rose were better hits for the Alternative band helping them reach a broader audience, as these short releases have been the band’s best so far. While Theresa falls short of Rose, it does fulfill its place among the other grandmother EPs.
